The road to 13.1: Cool rush

5 March 2009

I love, love, LOVE this weather!  It was around 10° C / 50° F today and a little breezy; in other words, it was great weather for running!  So, after work, I ran.

Run #24:  4 miles, 40:50, 10:12.5/mile

Once again, I was very happy with my splits.

Mile 1:  10:34.14
Mile 2:  10:42.79
Mile 3:  10:24.53
Mile 4:  9:08.77

When I finished, I was all, “For real?!  9:08 and change??!!”  Okay, so I didn’t say it out loud, but I totally thought it.  That’s the best mile I’ve turned in … what … forever!  Okay, not forever.  I did log a 6:08 mile in 10th grade.  Since I started running again, though, I’ve not had a better mile … and it was my fourth mile of the day!!!

About 3 miles in, I got a nice little bonus.  I was running through an area of the Portage Creek Bicentennial Trail where there was still a bit of snow on either side of the trail.  As a result, the air there was several degrees cooler than on other parts of the trail.  It was so very refreshing!

On the medical front, I didn’t run with my new shoe inserts; I’m supposed to start doing that on Sunday.  I did, though, pay very close attention to my stride, and I tried really hard to run better.  Right now, my feet are a little sore, but my shin doesn’t feel so bad.  I hope that continues to be the case….

That’s great that you ran your fastest mile at the end. I find that both my first and last mile are the fastest. I think the first mile is like a kid piling food on his plate, they have every intention of eating all they are taking, their mind is just bigger than what they can handle. I probably think my pace is going to be faster than it actually is on most runs.

I love running in the snow too. I love running in the rain. I love running when with my shirt off when it is warm outside. So much good running weather out there!

Thanks for the kind words, Chris. I try very, very hard to pace myself well enough that I have a little something extra left for the last mile or so. I’m with you on the first mile; I have such a hard time pacing myself properly. It’s not easy.

I might just get a chance to run in the rain tomorrow. Looks like off and on rain all day. Should be fun….

      Take care, and happy running!
