Race report: Kindleberger 5K

12 July 2009

Yesterday, I ran in the Kindleberger 5K race in Parchment.  The course starts off flat-to-downhill, then goes uphill a bit, and then finishes downhill-to-flat.

I didn’t have quite the run I had hoped.  My legs were never particularly excited about racing … or running … or walking … or moving.  Still, I showed up, and I raced.

Time:  25 minutes, 22 seconds

Age group:  Men 30-34

Rank in age group:  4th out of 8

Overall rank:  81st out of 163

Despite the fact that I improved upon my previous best 5K by 3:26, I feel like I should have done better.  I could have done better on the hills, I think.

*sigh*  Epic fail.

Since I’m sort of training for a  marathon, I also had to worry about my need to cover some distance, so I had to go run after the race.  I’m not sure anyone really wants to run 9 miles after racing 3, but a runner has to do what a runner has to do.

9.36 miles, 1:36:59, 10:21.6/mile

I’m not at all bothered by the pace of that run.  After all, I had gone all out for a 5K race.  On top of that, I did not run an easy course.  I started at my car in Parchment and ran south on Riverview to Mount Olivet.  There, I did something familiar to those who ran the Borgess half marathon, going up Mount Olivet hill and through Spring Valley Park.  Upon exiting the park, I headed east to my turn-around point and went back whence I came.  While I got to go down Mount Olivet instead of up, I had to go back through Spring Valley Park.  It was rough, but it was a solid run with several steep climbs.

After running and a snack, I headed over to The Studio for the strength assessment included in the Summer Safari program.  The trainer who worked on me let me know that she’d do what she could in 15 minutes, but that there were all sorts of things she could fix.

You don’t want to hear that from a trainer.  Ever.

She caused me some pain, but it was all in the name of helping me to improve my strength and form.  She also gave me homework, most of which seems to require balance.

Ugh.  Why does everything require balance?

After that and a trip to Gazelle for more Body Glide, I headed off to Biggby to get caffeinated goodness from Emily, stopped at Meijer, then crashed out at home.
