Race report: Woodstock 5K, plus two other runs

2 August 2009

It’s time to play catch-up on the blogging thing again.  It’s hard to blog when internet access is limited.  Such is life, I suppose.  I will start with Thursday’s long run.

I set out fairly early on my 15-mile run; it was probably about 0710 CDT.  It took me way longer to finish than it should have.  It was warm, it was humid, and it was hilly, but … really, I should have done much, much better.  I walked out the last mile, actually.  It was a total, unmitigated failure.

15 miles, 2:48:09, 11:12.6/mile

After my failed effort and a shower, I headed out to have lunch with a friend from high school.  We graduated together, and she was able to bring her kids along to join us for lunch.  Unfortunately, her husband couldn’t be there; I had been looking forward to meeting him.

Dear Christina,

It was so great to see you again!  Thanks for bringing along the kids; they were great.  You have a lovely family.  I look forward to meeting your husband sometime in the future.

Sincerely,

Darrell

With that crappy effort under my belt, I didn’t expect very much of myself in the Woodstock 5K.  True, I didn’t necessarily expect to race all out, as I had done such a long run the day before.  Ultimately, I did much better than I expected I would.

Time:  26:23

Age group:  Men 30-34

Rank in age group:  20th of 35 runners

Rank in gender:  222nd of 470 runners

Overall rank:  268th of 856 runners

I enjoyed the race.  The course was rather flat (at least as compared to other courses I’ve run), there were two water stations, and the Anniston Fire Department opened a hydrant to spray cool water on runners heading down the home stretch.

Sunday, I logged a recovery run that turned out to be much faster than I expected.  I ran at Oxford Lake, where there is a 0.67-mile trail around the lake.  The course was very flat, and I found myself running way faster than I realized, or than I should have.

5 miles, 45:35, 9:06.9/mile

Since I don’t have to run again until Tuesday, I can focus on getting some other things done.  Hooray! … or something.
