Road Trip to Buffalo, in Photos

10 July 2012

Along with my friends Angela, Annie, and Marlin, I headed off to the Buffalo area at the end of June to run in the Rapid Running Buffalo Half Marathon. Oh, wait — Rapid Running canceled postponed their event. Fortunately, the Town of Orchard Park, the Buffalo Bills, Eclipse Multi-Sport, and the Buffalo Niagara Sports Commission weren’t interested in letting a shady company an unfortunate situation get in the way of a great event, and held their own half marathon and 5k: the 50 Yard Finish.

Seriously, folks, stay away from events organized (and I use the term loosely) by Rapid Running. To claim that you’re postponing an event — 9 days before the event, mind you — because you have better-than-expected registration is not really believable.

While the race was very well organized (especially given the six days in which the organizers had to pull it together), I didn’t have a very good run, finishing in 2:13:49. It’s not my best time, but it really wasn’t my day. Nonetheless, the trip was a blast, and it’s time to share a few photos to prove it….

Pennsylvania Rest Area Rules and Regulations, Springfield Township, Pennsylvania

I’m a bureaucrat, and *I* think this list of rules is too long.

Darrell at Ralph Wilson Stadium, Orchard Park, New York

This wasn’t my first trip to Ralph Wilson Stadium, but it was the first time I didn’t have to wear 5 layers of clothing.

Goliath, Clarence, NY

Goliath is 22 pounds of awesome.

Marcell Dareus Jersey, Town of Orchard Park, New York

It’s always nice to see the pro jersey of a former Alabama player hanging in the team store of your favorite NFL squad.

Darrell Finishing the Half Marathon, Town of Orchard Park, New York

When finishing a half marathon on a football field, it’s generally my practice to go all Deion Sanders and high-step the finish. Marlin caught me in between high steps.

Buffalonian Dinner, Town of Clarence, New York

Dinner after the half marathon was awesome. Annie’s family decided to ensure that I got to eat a proper Buffalo meal. Along with the macaroni salad, we enjoyed Buffalo wings (duh), pizza (who knew it was a big thing there?), and beef on weck.

Waffle House Breakfast, Austinburg Township, Ohio

What road trip isn’t better without a visit to Waffle House?
